Membership of the Bar Association

The New South Wales Bar Association is a voluntary Association of practising barristers. Being a member of the Bar Association and holding a NSW barrister's practising certificate are distinctly separate. Click here for information regarding applying for a NSW barrister's practising certificate.

Benefits of membership of the Bar Association

  • As a member of the Association, if you have a practising certificate and approved professional indemnity insurance, your liability for damages is limited to $1 million by virtue of The New South Wales Bar Association's Professional Standards Scheme.

  • Access to the members-only section of the web site

  • Only practising members appear on the 'Find a barrister' directory on the Bar Association's web site, which allows members of the public to search for a barrister. Searches may be made by name, location and practice areas.

  • Class A members with a current NSW practising certificate are eligible to stand for and vote at the annual Bar Council elections

  • Receive regular e-mail updates on current news from the Bar Association

  • Receive copies of the Bar Association's monthly publication Bar Brief and bi-annual publication Bar News

In accordance with Chapter 4 of the Bar Association's Constitution only local barristers holding a current NSW practising certificate can be a ‘Class A' member of the Bar Association. However, the Constitution also provides for ‘Class B' membership open to any interstate practitioners, judges, retirees etc. Click here for details of the cost of membership for NSW practising barristers and the annual subscription fees applicable to those not holding a NSW barrister’s practising certificate. The membership year runs from 1 July to 30 June.
