Introduction
The
purpose of these statistics is to provide a profile of the NSW Bar
and membership of the NSW Bar Association at a point in time from
the available data.
The
table of contents in each section lists each category of data contained
therein. The data is presented in graphical and table/pie chart
format.
The
data of the current year is sourced from the certification database
maintained by the NSW Bar Association. Data from past years has
been obtained from the NSW Bar Associations annual reports.
All
information held by the NSW Bar Association has been provided by
individual barristers or their staff. Where the Association
becomes aware of a change, that change is noted on the database.
Further, each year during practising certificate renewals, all barristers
are asked to formally confirm the data held about them by the Association.
The
current years data is 'real time'. Daily changes are made
to the certification database as information is received. Whilst
daily changes may be minimal, a number of major changes occur each
year to the database. These are the renewal of practising certificates
in July, the appointment of new silks in October, and the natural
transitions of the Bar such as retirements at the end of the calendar
year.
It
should be noted that the NSW Bar Association database (as with most
databases) has limitations and that some data may contain insignificant
errors.
The
NSW Bar Association welcomes any feedback, whether be it on the
data categories or format. If there is other statistical information
that has not been included and you think would be useful, please
let us know.
